5th Grade Field Trip to SERC


On Monday, October 13th Patrick Henry Fifth Graders took a field trip to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) located in Edgewater, Maryland. The trip was sponsored by PTA grant. Students had hands on experience in investigating nature, the Chesapeake Bay ecosystems, and wetland ecology. Students went to multiple stations, facilitated by parents and SERC specialists. Fifth graders had hands on experience in: seining, hiking, looked in microscopes, investigated oyster/crab ecology, and water health. Students got to touch and see grass shrimp, plankton, non stinging jellyfish, spot fish , blue crab, crab worms, mud crabs and an American eel. Fun time had by all!
